An Open Letter, From Us

Being in an industry where we are deeply ingrained in the world of social media. The past few weeks have been incredibly eye-opening. We’ve seen social media be used as a vehicle to propel the Black Lives Matter movement forward. We’ve also seen it used as a tool to amplify voices, to share truths, to share stories, to share resources, and most of all to share support and solidarity with the BIPOC community.

Again, being deeply ingrained with the industry means we are in a network that is periphery or closely connected to A L O T of influencers, content creators, designers, freelancers, and communities all of which are very well aware of how to use social media. This means we not only get to witness the fruits of labour people put within their social media platforms, but also the lack of…

We understand that allyship goes beyond just sharing posts, stories, IGTVs, website links… And of course, we are aware of the consequences of performative allyship for the sake of retaining your reputation. True work is often done behind the scenes in the difficult conversations we have, in the support whether physical, emotional or monetary that we give, and the time we dedicate to learning more.

However, we are very cognizant of the fact that now more than ever, people are listening, watching and consuming. To see some of our colleagues, friends and peers who are VERY educated about and active on social media in their day to day lives, and their jobs….but then choosing to stay silent or not acknowledge or address the systemic issue publicly is a huge concern for us at Rêveur.

This is a not so gentle reminder that no matter the size of your audience,YOUR VOICE MATTERS. It IS YOUR DUTY to facilitate and inspire these difficult conversations. It IS YOUR DUTY share resources and ways to support the Black community. It IS YOUR DUTY to actively work to create changes, in your workplace, your lifestyle, your communities. Now is not the time to stay silent, in fact it is unacceptable to stay silent. And if you are not choosing not to speak up, we hope instead that you are listening and learning intently. Then, reflect on why you are choosing not to speak up.

We are committing to holding those in our network accountable but also staying accountable ourselves to being the change we want to see in this world.

Rêveur is committed to increasing diversity, amplifying Black voices, and supporting Black businesses in our work and beyond wherever possible.
